Free Radical Cafe Radio Show

This is a two-part interview/discussion wit John Dikopoulos, a science journalist, astronomer, and academic scholar, hosting the Free Radical Cafe show at TrippleT radio station in Townsville, Queensland, Australia on May 2009. You can hear a discussion about human-natural systems interactions, complexity and the science of social-ecological systems.

Part 1 of 2 (10:00 minutes): A discussion about human-environment interactions. What are factors affecting these interactions, and the dynamic and volatile nature of them. The need for community engagement. Remote Communities in Norther Rivers of Australia. Cultural and intangible values, sense of place and sense of community. The need for a bottom-up approach and the scientific methodology of attitudinal and behavioral patterns.

Part 2 of 2 (8:18 minutes): In this second part of the show, we talk about complexity and the politics of decision making. How we convince people that complex problems require complex solutions. Challenging the idea of Occam's razor and how it is used to address complex social-ecological challenges. Solutions often can be found in the complexity of interactions themselves, and the micro-to-macro links. Viewer's questions and answer.
